I think the open source version has some limitations, and I sure don't want to ever go back to running my own mail server.

I didn't know Zimbra wouldn't let you share contacts. Thanks for the heads-up.

Aaron, we use a hosted Zimbra. At $50, per user per year, the price is comparable to Google Apps for business, with a functionality that is closer to MS Outlook/Exchange. It supports imap, caldav, etc. It even has a desktop application.

Biggest drawback is lack of real shared contacts, esp in the desktop app. We all use the web-based version, so it is a minor niggle.

There is an open source version of the server that is free, to the best of my knowledge.

<a href="#comment-88" rel="nofollow">@Mark</a> -
Thanks for the spam, Mark. How does myDocs differ from the functionality found in Exchange? Does myDocs help anyone who isn't using SharePoint, Microsoft's proprietary and expensive attempt at a collaborative workspace?

We use a great tool called myDocs which is an add-in for Outlook, that lets us view SharePoint Document Libraries by clicking standard Outlook folders, and drag emails into these folders to upload into SharePoint. There is more information on this at http://www.nsynergy.com/Products/myDocs/Pages/About_myDocs.aspx or mail to Mark.Davis@nsynergy.com.
