Comment on eBay Live Auctions is dead by Matt Price

Aaron - we never used eBay's Live Auction Technology. In their contracts they basically said that they are going to charge us for the operation of the site by listing a catalog, and they were going to charge per fee for the service and then said they were not responsible for anything.

Not good business if you are the owner of the technology and your system operator hits the wrong key during a $3,000,000 sale.

Plus just using PayPal made the damages worse. Every time you took a payment over $50 they locked out accounts, wanting information faxed to them, and the whole mess.

I say good riddance to slow Java enabled websites and bid factories. It was guaranteed, that when you bid, you were bidding much higher than was reported on the screen. I say good riddance to companies proprietary nightmares and fidicuaries that are not overseen.

Now... Back to our regularly scheduled auction.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('202','Matt Price','Aaron - we never used eBay\'s Live Auction Technology.
I downloaded the software including the toolbar. I like the reader better than the Adobe reader, however my Gmail didn't work properly, it would take forever to load going in to the inbox or opening a message, at times it didn't open at all. I uninstalled the the tool bar and the problem is solved. The typewriter function no longer works but the reader does. I'm using XP and Firefox. Any ideas?

Thanks,

I am using AVG Free and it was working up until tonight sometime. I am showing a problem with flashutil10a.exe and I noticed that when I go into my virus vault, it is there. I tried restoring it from AVG VV, and it wouldn't allow it. Then I tried to run my playlist online and it won't let me because it needs flashplayer, so I opened up Tskmgr and closed the flashutil10a.exe program and sure enough, it allowed me to play the playlist. What is going on, anyone know of a fix? It is getting to the point where I have to shut down all my Internet windows and restart them after shutting down flashutil10a.exe.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('199','Tonya','I am using AVG Free and it was working up until tonight sometime.
@Aaron - Aaron, to put it simply GridRepublic is BOINC. BOINC is the technology which is enhanced and benefits from GridRepublic. GridRepublic is a nonprofit that is organized around BOINC and provides what is called in technical terms an account management system which simplifies use. They also provide a place where people and businesses can come together to get materials to help promote awareness and participation. GridRepublic created the account manager idea.

GridRepublic has been working with BOINC developers to make discovering, using, and managing BOINC as easy as possible. Normally if you run BOINC without an account manager you would have to find each project on the Internet and go to their website make a new login and password for each project. With GridRepublic you can find the other projects all on the website and with one login you can poiint and click what projects you want to join, manage your settings, and interact with other people. You can attach to as many projects as you wish and have as many computers you have running BOINC be managed with GridRepublic.

In addition to just providing the features GridRepublic is working to raise awareness and participation in BOINC by providing a simple and easy to use site. They also are working to make a point of unification that brings all of BOINC together for the public to be able to discover and understand without having all the text and confusing technical terms. They want to make it so if you can check your email that you can run BOINC. GridRepublic provides its own download which is BOINC, but has a few customization for GridRepublic users. If you use BOINC already, GridRepublic can be used as well if you go to tools and click attach to account manager.

I hope this clarifies things for you if not come over to the GridRepublic site and check out the community and ask some more. www.gridrepublic.org/community
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('195','Jon B','<a href=\'#comment-193\' rel=\"nofollow\">@Aaron<\/a> - Aaron, to put it simply GridRepublic is BOINC. They also provide a place where people and businesses can come together to get materials to help promote awareness and participation. GridRepublic created the account manager idea.\r\n\r\nGridRepublic has been working with BOINC developers to make discovering, using, and managing BOINC as easy as possible. Normally if you run BOINC without an account manager you would have to find each project on the Internet and go to their website make a new login and password for each project. With GridRepublic you can find the other projects all on the website and with one login you can poiint and click what projects you want to join, manage your settings, and interact with other people. You can attach to as many projects as you wish and have as many computers you have running BOINC be managed with GridRepublic.\r\n\r\nIn addition to just providing the features GridRepublic is working to raise awareness and participation in BOINC by providing a simple and easy to use site. If you use BOINC already, GridRepublic can be used as well if you go to tools and click attach to account manager.\r\n\r\nI hope this clarifies things for you if not come over to the GridRepublic site and check out the community and ask some more. http://www.gridrepublic.org\/community’); return false;”>Quote

I would like to raise the thought of using GridRepublic to join BOINC and projects. GridRepublic is developed in collaboration with GridRepublic to make joining, discovery, and control as easy as possible. It makes it as simple as 1, 2, 3.

One choose a login email and password.
Two choose your project(s) you wish to help.
Three download and go; though if you already have BOINC you can attach to GridRepublic under the tools menu in the advanced view.

I highly recommend GridRepublic. They also have a page on Myspace and soon coming an application for Facebook where you can manage things if you log into Facebook.

Check it out at: www.gridrepublic.org
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('192','Jon B','I would like to raise the thought of using GridRepublic to join BOINC and projects.
Great tips Aaron! We tried to get auctioneers on board with web-based video long ago, but it wasn't until YouTube came along that they started to take notice. The delivery is definitely an important aspect that is sometimes overlooked. We help auctioneers with video every day and have since the very beginning!

Rick and Nancy Romanus actually started in video production long before we started hosting websites as AuctionServices.com. When Rick and Nancy moved from upstate New York to Virginia, they worked almost exclusively in video production. One of Rick's auctioneer customers and good friends asked Rick if he knew anything about this "Internet thing," and AuctionServices.com was born. That was back in the mid 1990's, but we still maintain a full video production department as part of the AuctionServices.com family (see http://blueridgedigital.com/ for more information).

Video is, and always has been, an essential part of marketing packages. In fact, we even launched our own "YouTube for Auctioneers" in 2007 at the NAA convention so auctioneers could embed videos in their site without the YouTube branding. Even that small detail of the video delivery process was important enough to some of our customers to warrant hosting a YouTube alternative for them. Check out the National Auction Broadcast Network at http://nabnetwork.com/.

If you, or any other auctioneers, ever need any production or post production work done, don't hesitate to call Rick. We can dispatch camera crews anywhere in the world, and we do all sorts of post-production work including green screens and virtual environments.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('180','Stuart Bain','Great tips Aaron!
Was the buyer's premium viewed as a problem in his area? Did his customers balk at paying it? If so, then this might be a great idea. If the buyers premium was not viewed as an obstacle before, this program could put some doubt in his customers mind about paying it that wasn't there before. I would have tested the idea with a small number of my best customers before sending it out to everyone (maybe he did). Let's hope he has a good system for keeping track of who paid! Bottom line for me is that the potential increase in cash flow doesn't justify the loss of the buyer's premium. It's all about training your customers and just when he has them trained, he changes the game plan. I like great new ideas, but don't think this is one.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('163','Sarah Sonke','Was the buyer\'s premium viewed as a problem in his area?
Whoa! Thanks for pointing out the dial pad. I'd never noticed it before.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for some time. I did however discover recently that my Treo has a touchscreen dial pad feature that shows the corresponding letters on the numbers.

I think the open source version has some limitations, and I sure don't want to ever go back to running my own mail server.

@Col. Ryan Wankel -
Thanks for the comment, Ryan. Does the Blackjack II have a full keyboard like the Treo or does it have the keyboard with multiple letters on the same key?
